Peripheral Vision

: periphery (as the shape surrounding the center away from it)

The eyes of primates look forward, differently from other animals. (Owls are exceptional.)
Mainly living in trees, primates evolved their eyes with good vision. Especially humans,
using their hands, have macula that can see many details of shapes and colors in
the center of their vision. Even so, they had a risk of getting caught or attacked from
behind in nature, so their brain worked with the entire macula and peripheral vision
all together to judge and to move their bodies.

But in the present days, computer-workers have about 30% less peripheral vision
than ancient people. This kind of warp of eye-usage has created a lot of
near-sighted or weak eyes

Also when the left and the right visions started to be different, the better one
is more used, and the other can be more weakened. These imbalances,
like wearing shoes of different heights, make much nerve stress.

In this page, I'll introduce exercises for mainly computer users:
for getting back good balanced eyes by stimulating peripheral vision;
and training the left and the right eyes separately to balance both eyes.

Here too I searched with my experiences based on Dr. Meir Schneider's method.

Preparation:

Recognition of macula and peripheral vision

Tape the top of the smaller black paper horizontally between your eyebrows.
When you focus far away through the center of the paper, your macula is
all covered by the paper, and you lose your central vision.

I devised something to protect against seeing the paper itself.
Imagine (the sun) in (black color) at a far distance
at the center of the paper, and while you focus on it, your macula nerves
can be relaxed by the ability of the black color and the sun energy.
So your macula, which worked hard with a computer, now have a rest.

Maintaining that condition, try to bring some newspaper with big fonts
in your peripheral vision, without moving your eyes from the black sun.
You can see you have a paper, but you can read nothing, right?

Macula and periphery work differently having completely different density
of vision nerves and the ways to get a view. With thinner density of nerves,
peripheral vision can't recognize details of figures.

* The trigger of starting this vision exercise was from the shock of
experiencing temporary blindness. Just about this paper area was
suddenly blocked by a zigzag illusion pattern; and I couldn't read at all.
This was not related to the eyeball, but from the brain condition, I knew later.
I felt that my brain forced me to stop computing to give my vision nerves a rest.

A) Stimulating peripheral vision

Purpose:
While the macula nerves are resting, to stimulate peripheral vision
for widening visible domain and for making vision brighter.

You can do this both indoors or outdoors, sitting on a chair or standing.

The method:
Tape the 2 by 3 inches paper as in the above writing; and see the imagined
at the center of the black space. During this exercise, your body moves,
but not your eye focal point; also keep your head angle straight..

This is the sign of EL basis (wave): relaxed flat hand
waves or shakes up and down, using the wrist spring.
(In a compounded symbols, is usually more natural
to show it by movement sign drawing the wave shape by
the other hand signed hand. the example}

Bring both flat hands (fingers point forward) over your head and quickly shake
as the wave sign. Can you see your shaking hands above, without moving
your eyeballs? If you can't see too much, adjust the hands location to the
upper edge of your peripheral vision, stretching your torso backward.
Then slowly and symmetrically move the hands to draw a large circle together
keeping each waving quickly. When your arms widely open around the shoulder
and the chest height, your shoulder blades come closer.
When the hands meet again in front of the lower abdomen, your torso bends
forward to keep the wave signs at the edge of your peripheral view.
From the lowest point, the hands return to the same route to the top and repeat.
Never move your focal point, and keep quickly shaking your hands.

We can't recognize details of shapes in peripheral vision, but can catch
a movement very fast. It has worked for protecting our own life from a sudden
attack and for finding game in nature. This exercise encourages the function of
peripheral vision, stimulating with hand movements.

This is also quite a stretch for entire upper body. Breathe slowly together
with the movement, feeling like extending your body energy field. If you do this
a few minutes a few times a day for a break from office working, you might get
a fresh idea for the work. Enjoy this, looking forward to seeing the circle wider
as well as your body more flexible..

* If you use the longer paper horizontally, the vision can be tighter
at the very edge of the periphery.
・ Backward jogging can stimulate peripheral vision too.
You are facing in the opposite direction and macula vision doesn't much
change, so your consciousness comes to the edge of peripheral vision
showing new scenes one after another. By this way, you also train
different muscles from normal jogging.

For building the Earth Language system, I researched about the human
brain system. The vision related parts of brain work was especially complicated.
Each retina cell receives only light or color information; but by the location,
the amount and the relation with near and other parts, repeatedly analyzing
and unifying, verifying the past experiences, actually the brain sees things.

In other words, your vision is much connected to your mind and heart.
I couldn't read when I thought I couldn't read without glasses. As long as
one's mind insists that way, there is no way to fix his or her condition.
Starting these eye practices, I realized that improving vision means
improving heart and mind.

For resting eyes or for stimulating vision, mind concentration is important.
A symbol can help for instant concentration. Unlike other languages mainly
used by the left side of the brain, an EL symbol can be connected to the entire
brain and body. So when you use more, it would be much more powerfully
effective for the purpose through the entire body.

B) Training the right and the left visions separately

The right and the left visions of human duplicate about 60 degrees in the center;
and they are shifted a little, because the angles from both eyes to the focal point are different.

* Aren't you allowing unbalanced vision between the right and the left?
Hold a pen vertically in front of your nose. When you focus on a pillar
that is over it, the pen looks like two, doesn't it?. Now focusing on the pen,
try to overlap it with the pillar Stop the hand; and close one eye.
If only your right eye always sees the overlapped view with the pillar, and
the left eye doesn't, your right eye dominates without your consciousness.
If you have balanced eyes, you must see two identical pillars over both sides of the pen.

The brain unifies the shifted images; and through the shift, we can feel
the distance and depth of the object.

However we can feel distance and depth even through only one eye.
You can know it doing this exercise.

The method (1):
Tape the longer paper vertically from the forehead to the chin.
The central two inches are covered, but because of overlap vision of both eyes,
you can see the whole site as one, though the center is not as light as the original.
The brain gets the vision as one, but when you close your right eye, you can't see
most of your left side; and vice versa. You are now seeing two separate visions together.

Under this condition, play catch ball between both hands.
For this purpose, a ball easily rolls away, so I'm using a stuffed blue bird.
If you have nothing, an old  sock filled with beans or corn tied by a rubber band would work.

At first do the catch ball just standing or sitting. Then do it while walking.
Also try to throw the ball up vertically and catch it by the other hand.
You ought to see your hand and ball on both sides by each side of the eye only.
But it doesn't take much time to feel the distance to the ball, does it?
It's interesting to know how our brain works to network between the eyes
and other parts of the body.

The method (2):
I tried this method horizontally taping the two by three inches paper, keeping
eye-focus to the center   as (A). The horizontal catch ball between both hands
was blocked by the central vision  There is a very short time to see the ball vaguely
in peripheral vision. At first I often dropped my bird. But soon the brain learned this condition too.

The brain part working with central vision is good for recognizing the details of shapes
over a longer time, and the brain part working with peripheral vision is sensitive to feel
movement and efficiently to associate with the body. Perhaps because of that,
unexpectedly I could play walking catch ball in this condition even better than
under the vertical taping condition. Now I understand what Ichiro of the Seattle Mariners
has trained for his backhand-catch, sprinting in the same direction to the ball goes,
without looking at it.

Enjoy playing (1) and (2) sometimes (maybe ten minutes a day totally).

The method (3):
This is an exercise to balance the right and the left visions.

Type and print random letters in various sizes, and put the paper on a bright wall.
Stand at the distance where you can barely read the middle sized letters
with both eyes. Covering one eye at a time, test which eye is weaker.

Look at the part of the chart that is obscure with the weaker eyes.
Look at the same place with both eyes, and close your eyes to visualize
that clearer vision, telling yourself that it's this clear.

Then cover the better eye with the longer black paper, waving your -hand
on the side of the cover to see the print with the weaker eye. Stimulating the
peripheral vision and the visualization helps to get better vision for
the weaker eye with more light. Repeat the process.

方法(1):

方法(2):

方法(3):
