The story of these fabrics

These butterflies’wings are mainly made out of Japanese silk clothes from before WW2.
Actually many of these fabrics were from my mother's kimono when she was young. After the first bombs in Osaka in March 1945 (about 6000 people were killed in the night), she carried out her family things as much as a horse wagon could carry. At that time, there was no fossil fuel for trucks in Japan; buses were running by burning charcoal. My father was already killed as a military doctor in the Pacific ocean before seeing me. After our moving out from Osaka, most of the main part of city was completely destroyed.

My mother re-dyed and reformed her old kimono to continue to use them, except some very formal unuseful ones. A silk kimono was taken apart and washed as individual pieces each time, and sewed again rotating the positions of cloth, to avoid using a weakened piece for the same tough part again. I really admired the old women's carefulness for hand sewing. In the old days, they used all things and tools in this way, from one generation to the next. But after my mother passed away, no body wanted to wear these kimono any more; then I got them from my sister.

I remembered that my mother used to tell us, "If your dad was alive, he could do a great thing for this world, I'm so sorry for his talent. I just raised you but can't do anything like him, too bad." So that I hope that the old fabrics, which she and the similar women saved, can work for something to bring a harmony to this world at the end of their lives.

Also I have a memory of my great grandma when I was younger than three years old. I'm not sure I really saw her or not, but I recall a beautiful, small silk box that she had made. I developed this craft method through my dim memory of the box, although the butterflies are flat and much larger.

Peaceful feelings come up when we know a vertical connection through generations, as well as when connecting and cooperating with each others among a horizontal relationship. EL was made by collecting old communication wisdoms and spirits from the entire planet, respecting traditions. When cooperating for raising awareness of EL and communicating in EL, surges of peaceful feelings might connect the world.

The Peace Butterfly Project

New Creations with EL symbols
The Peace Butterfly Project is to develop new art works using EL symbols, which have a strong impact and methods to create something new. Yoshiko's works above are samples of that. EL is easy to learn; you might take less than an hour to memorize 100 symbols. Also creations with EL symbols are not only for visual arts and crafts, but also for physical exercises. New Tai Chi and Sword Tai-Chi with the EL imagination power and movement signs are now in development.

You are invited to join these creations and practices using your own ways and materials. Even if you are not an artist, you might be able to create some new nice works with the power of EL symbols. Please enjoy the opportunity, and share those appreciations with others. Someday in the future, let's have an EL art show gathering pieces from all over the world.

蝶の羽の絹にまつわる物語

これらは、主に戦前の絹でできています。その多くは私の母の若いころの着物の一部でした。
私が３歳の３月、大阪の夜空を真っ赤に染めて初めての空襲を受けたのを記憶しています。
一夜で６千人の命が奪われたと後に知りました。
軍医だった父はすでに戦死、母は、家や家財をあきらめ、
１頭が曳く荷馬車に積めるだけの品を積んで奈良に疎開しました。
石油系の燃料はもうなくなり、バスは木炭で走っていた時代でした。
その後も続いた空襲で、大阪は焼け野が原になりましたが、
私たち家族の命と、戦前からつながるわずかな品のみ助かりました。

昔の絹は丈夫で、母は染め直しに出したり仕立て直したりして使いつづけました。
着物の洗濯は、そのたびに解いて洗い張りし、縫い直されます。
一部だけ傷まないよう上手に布の場所を替え、糸さえもほどいたものから再利用するので、
後の手間を考え、とても丁寧に縫われていて頭が下がります。
昔の日本人は、着物だけでなく何でもこのようにものの命が最後まで活躍できるよう
心を込めて作り上げ、世代から世代へ大切に使ってきていたのです。
ですが母亡き後、もう誰もそれらを着ない時代になり、私がこれらの布を譲り受けました。

母は生前、「才能ゆたかっだったお父さんがもし生きてれば、
どんなにか世のためになる仕事をしたろうに若死にし、
自分は何も役に立てなくて残念」と、よくこぼしていました。
だから、いつか世界をつなごうとする目的で、
彼女の着物を使いたいと思うようになりました。

私にはもう一つ幼児期の記憶があります。
実際に曾祖母に会ったのかどうかはわかりませんが、
曾祖母が手作りしたという小さな美しい押し絵の小箱を見せてもらったことがあります。
その印象がいつまでも残っていて、どうすればそんなのができるかなと、
ちょっと大きさや役目は異なるものの、この 蝶を作る方法として手探りしました。

自分の中に縦に流れているものがあるのを感じるとき、
横のつながりで助け合えるのと同じくらい平和を与えてくれます。
地球語も、原始以来のヒトのさまざまな知恵や精神から汲み取って編み上げています。
これをともに育て、これで世界がつながるとき、大きな調和のうねりを
私たちは生み出せるだろうと信じます。


ピース・バタフライ・プロジェクト

これらの蝶は、独りだけでの試作ですが、
地球語のシンボルは象形の強さをもつものが多く、
何かを訴え、表現するアートに向きます。
造形には素人でも、地球語が訴える力と組み合わせの面白さで
新鮮なアートを生み出せるかもしれません。

また、地球語の多手段による表現や表音能力を使えば、
意味を伝えるダンスや、たのしい声のパフォーマンスもできるかもしれません。
手話や全身による記号を使ってイメージを育て
心身をバランスする瞑想体操なども創作の途にあります。

ピース・バタフライ・プロジェクトは、
そんなさまざまな創作の輪への参加をひろめながら
通じ合う世界をひろげていこうとしています。
