A Happy New Year To You!
In Japanese, ‘the first day of a year’ is simply called GANJITSU or original day, perhaps because of the tradition for everyone to be reborn together in the society every year, returning to the nature where all lives have come. So on that day, the people go to see the first sun rising or to pray at a shrine usually surrounded by an old spiritual forest. I like the custom, and here too, I’d like to return to the origin of languages to think and recreate a new communication way in the future.

新年おめでとうございます。
新年の最初の日を「元日」と呼ぶ表現には、毎年ふりだしに戻って自然の源から見直し、社会ぐるみで新しく蘇ろうとの思いが込もっていて、いいですね。この日、初日の出や神社に参る習慣も、自然に帰って蘇るための儀式でしょうか。このコーナーでも今月は、言語の元を振り返りながら現状をみて、再生への糧にできたらとおもいます。

[ How languages have been ]

The Japanese sound of Hi means
‘day’, ‘the sun’ and ‘fire’ with each different Kanji.
In ancient times, Hi was more widely used
as ‘daytime’, ‘weather’, flame’ and ‘signal fire’.
I guess that originally Hi was for the sun
with its heat and light.
‘Day time’ is with the sun,
and people could do almost nothing at night,
so a time with the sun was a day.
Also ‘weather’ was how the sun looked,
and ‘fire/flame’ might be recognized
as a piece of the sun on the earth.
Once upon a time, only Hi covered many subjects.
In history, Hi was sometimes changed into Ho,
compounding with more syllables to distinguish meanings,
as Honoho( flame ) and Hotaru ( firefly ).
While continuously changing,
Japanese still keeps the ancient core of the language,
carrying on the way to understand the heart of nature
with simple expressions like haiku, etc.

(As I wrote in the Mandala series 3,)
“In the world of lives, [now] is always in the circulation
of congeries of past existences”,
and a language also seems to be in the same way
as one of the productions of nature.

Imagine the era of children of Eve
around six million years ago in Africa.
They who evolved from anthropoid apes had organs
and instinct to keep their lives as well as other mammals,
also five senses - superior sight, hearing, smell, taste,
touch, and the feeling of movement and space.
When their senses were stimulated,
their emotion moved, and the body/face reacted,
a voice of the feeling also came out.
The most remarkable evolution was the great capacity
for memories and the speed of synthesis/analysis of memories.
That system, humans have gotten.

But the new abilities can’t work soon after their birth.
Human children can’t survive
without care by their parents/the society.
Raised by a society, learning from his/her seniors/ancestors,
getting experienced, and they become humans.
A language is a method to connect
between a person and a person; a person and his/her society.

When not far from the Eve era,
pointing at the sun must be the way to show “the sun”.
“Pointing the sun after pretending to sleep” might be used
to tell “tomorrow”.
In the darkness, they might carry other’s hand
as the specific movement to make him imagine the sun.
Also they drew the shape of the sun
on a rock or the ground to show it.
We can understand a picture beyond time,
but can’t know what sound was the first word of the sun.
Their descendants have spread all over the earth,
taking millions of years.

The sun is the same, but its images and the feelings through it
are different between people in a desert and a snowy area.
The differences of feelings reflect
on the vocal expression: the word.
Also an adjective of the sun could be changed
into the word of the sun itself.
The materials of clothes, foods and housing,
and the ways of raising their spiritual power to live
were depending on the natural environment they lived in.
A word was given for a thing
in the peoples’ environment or daily lives,
and never produced for unrecognizable things.
Therefore when the environments were different,
their lifestyles and languages are also different.
Grammars have become unique in each society,
since created by how the society has been.

Primitive people might commonly communicate
with natural gestures and voices.
But the ways of human communication have separated
by dispersing of societies and developing languages in each area.
Along with the civilization growth,
languages have inclined to be more rules and logical thoughts.

The ears, which distinguish vocal sounds grow
in one’s infancy, scientists say.
Pronunciation can be unlimitedly changed,
however an infant takes the ways of pronunciation
around him/her into his/her basic vocal measurement.
Then s/he starts to hear unfamiliar sounds
putting it in order of the measurement.
So it needs much effort to master a foreign language,
and it’s hard to get perfect.
When one traditional language is used
in an international communication, a gap is made
for pronunciation and listening too.

Deaf people make their gestures naturally
to send some message,
but it’s too primitive for the contents of the civilized world.
So now, they are forced to use signs based on vocal sounds,
and to read the lips of a speaker, even they can listen to nothing.
Braille was also made based on sound,
and the users all have to master that particular way.
Only limited people can share the signs/Braille.
A vocal language, which is the base of signs and Braille
is changing all the time.
Even in one society, the gap between them and others
is widening more and more.

Sometimes languages were mixed by unification of societies
and people’s moving.
At the time, always the language of the stronger society
took priority over the new main structure and words.
A winner society often has forced its language on the losers.
Enforcing a language means compelling the life style
and the belief too,
and it remains long as a seed of conflict within the new society.
Even without enforcing, usually the losers learn
the winners’ language to survive in the competitive world.

Now the economical competition has overspread the earth.
There is a global movement to educate the language
of the strongest society to prepare the competition
with all other people.
Some linguists have started to reform the language
to bring up the universal language out of it,
increasing vocabularies from other languages and
simplifying the grammar, to be convivial from everywhere
and to have more expression ability.

A language sends the recognition way of the society.
The superior society on economy,
technology and arms has the language forged
by logical controversies and among many wars.
The linguistic system has been characterized to make
a rush to one way, whipped by the thought
that there is only one truth and the things not
in agreement with it are wrong, since very early history.
So the society is strong now.
Starting to think by the language makes you get involved
in their competition seeking to win.

In nature, mammals don’t seek to be a lion,
even if a lion is strong.
Someday a lion is going to be eaten by germs
and earthworms to raise grasses and trees.
Most human societies originally had sought
to keep coexistence and the balance of natural cycles
respecting nature.
But now, the powerful language and the economical wind
drive everyone into the global competition.
Small societies are sucked up by stronger ones,
and their languages, once existing in many
thousands of kinds are disappearing year by year.

Each language has deep roots since its primitive era.
When a language disappears, the messages
from the deep roots cease too.
In a certain society, snow is discriminated
from the dozens of its types.
Those discriminated words help to infer a peril or
a weather change, opening people’s eyes to see the detail.
Also the words raise people’s hearts
in poems and literatures.
Rhythms of words compose peculiar music.
When that language has gone away,
these precious wisdoms specially
for that environment also are eternally lost.

The global society is now leaving the unlimited hair-roots
of varied languages to become extinct,
and sowing the seed of the power language to rush
to join in the winning game.
But have you thought about what comes next?
While sucking up from others,
hasn’t the power language lost the original point
of contact with nature/earth?
Getting more and more complicated and diversified
in the language,
can they organize information with it easily?
Can the language connect a person and a person
or a person and the global society smoothly
without making a gap?
Can it hand the original spirit of the language
down to the future?
