2: As men moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar and settled there.
人々が東に向かって移動していて
シャイナに平原を見つけ、そこに居場所を定めました。
3: They said to each other, "Come, let's make bricks and bake them thoroughly."
They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar.
彼らはお互いに言い合いました。「ねぇ、土のブロックを作ってしっかり焼こうよ｣
彼らは意志のかわりに煉瓦と、そして接着用にタールを用いました。
4: Then they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens,
so that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth."
それからいいました。「そうだ、天まで届く塔のある街をわれらで造ろう。
そうすれば、われらは世界中に知られるかもしれない」
5: But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower that the men were building.
けれども神が降りてきて人々が建てている塔をご覧になりました。
6: The Lord said, "If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this,
then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.
神は仰せになりました。「人間は、同じことばを話しひとつでいるとこんなことを始めてしまい。
彼らにとって不可能な企ては何もなくなるだろう。
7: Come, let us go down and confuse their language
so they will not understand each other."
そうだ、降りて行って彼らの言語を混乱させよう。
そうすれば彼らは互いに通じ合えなくなる｣
8: So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth,
and they stopped building the city.
そうして神は人々を地球上に散らし、
人々は街の建設を止めました。
9: That is why it was called Babel
-- because there the Lord confused the language of the whole world.
From there the Lord scattered them over the face of the whole earth.
これが、なぜバベルと呼ばれるかのいわれ・・
神が世界中のことばを混乱されたからです。
そこから神葉人間を世界中に散らせられたのです。
